MERCY

I’m warm. Too warm. Stiflingly warm.

And so, so comfortable.

Too comfortable to move, but even as I try to snuggle back into the warmth that woke me, something niggles at the back of my mind, keeping me from fully falling back to sleep.

My eyes slowly blink open. Then I blink some more because all I can see is smooth tanned skin dusted with dark hair. A strong, steady heartbeat pounds against my ear and when I try to move, the arms banding around me tighten. Holding me against the thick, muscular chest I’m using as a pillow.

Everything comes back to me in a rush. The auction. The man—monster—who bought me. The…sex. Tipping my chin up, I’m surprised to find that his eyes are closed, and his face is lax with sleep. He looks… much less scary like this, with his features relaxed and the way he’s breathing evenly through his nose. We both must have fallen asleep after…

The pulsing ache between my legs becomes more noticeable, reminding me of exactly what caused it. My cheeks burn and…

Wait! My eyes dart back up and I watch him as he continues to sleep deeply.

This might be my chance to escape from him.

Holding my breath, I slowly start to wiggle out of his arms. The whole time watching his face for any signs that he’s waking up. But he doesn’t even twitch.

I shimmy and scoot until I manage to duck my head out from under his arms and then… I’m free of him! Now I just need to get to the door.

Sliding on my belly, I scoot to the edge of the bed, slipping over the edge, being so careful not to rock the springs. As soon as my feet hit the floor, I reach over and grab his dress shirt. Pushing my arms through the sleeves that hang well below my fingertips. My heart is pounding in my ears as I tiptoe across the room, working the buttons down the front.

The monster’s shirt falls to my knees, making it longer than the dress I was wearing earlier. The one that is still strewn in tattered shreds across the floor.

Focus!

My hand hits the door latch, and I pause. I can still hear the even cadence of the monsters breathing and when I chance a look over my shoulder, he hasn’t moved. Forcing my attention back to the door, I hold my breath and slowly press down on the handle. I’m expecting it to be locked, but when it unlatches, the breath I’m holding whooshes out.

Using both hands, I ease it open on silent hinges. Then I’m moving. Slipping out of the room and into the hallway.

I have no idea which way to go, so I choose a direction and run.

I need a plan. I need to find the dressing room where I left my purse. My bus fare is in there and I’ll need that. The clothes that I was wearing when I arrived should be in there, too. Rushing into the middle of an October night wearing only a dress shirt in this neighborhood is asking to be attacked.
